Surya House

Jill Dunkley and Andy Fisher built Surya House in 2007. The word “Surya” means “Sun” in Sanskrit, the ancient language in which yoga is spoken.

Nestled in a clearing surrounded by the forest and wildflowers of Eastern Ontario, the sunny location is warm and welcoming - a space to discover the benefits of Yoga therapy.

Jill believes that Yoga therapy is supported by the environment within which it is practiced. The background sounds of nature, good air quality, natural light, cork floors, and comfortable room temperatures found at Surya House all help to facilitate the deep inner experience that yoga can offer.

Jill and Andy value the natural world in which they live and to that end have built their home with great care, using green materials and energy and water saving technology. Surya House is a passive solar, super-insulated home with a wood heat masonry stove.

Andy and Jill plan to incorporate permaculture principles into their landscape design. They have created a system to capture rainwater from the roof of the house to water their large organic vegetable garden. Honey bees and an edible forest garden are still to come. Surya House is an ongoing project. ….Stay tuned.
